AMID INCREASED ALERTNESS to the hijacking by terrorists of flights arriving in the U.S. from Britain, US fighter jets escorted BA Flight 223 into Dulles after the names of roughly a dozen passengers matched entries in a terrorist watch list. Passengers were interviewed and deplaned without incident; today, the same flight was cancelled following security advice from the government. (
WaPo,
NYT). In all, at least four other incoming foreign flights in the last week have been directed to secure areas of the landing airport's tarmacs and subjected to rescreening, and F-16 escorts have also shadowed incoming foreign flights from Air France into Los Angeles. An Aeromexico flight from Mexico was turned back in midair after it was revealed that the carrier had not followed its own stated security procedures in screening passengers.
(Fortunately for me, Air Alaska isn't for security purposes considered a foreign carrier....)
