A NOBEL PRIZE FOR SISTANI? That's what David Brooks suggested on PBS last Friday. I think there's a good case to be made for it, since Sistani has been an unflagging advocate of peace and moderation. I'd say that if Sistani makes a dramatic gesture to his Sunni counterparts and puts together some kind of Islamic peace, he'd have a real shot at the prize.

But what if Sistani is waiting for the Americans to withdraw before reaching out, lest we take credit for the initiative and decide to continue with a now-less-bloody occupation? That's not an unreasonable concern, yet nothing is more likely to bring our soldiers home than clear signs of reconciliation.
