OUTSIDE YORK MINSTER I've just seen the statue of Constantine, the interloper acclaimed emperor by his army in York in 306 AD. Emperor by military appointment? Nice work if you can get it.

The only Roman Emperor to raise his standard in Britannia and actually manage to stay the course as well. Of course, 'military appointment' (good phrase) was the standard method for that time period.
yes indeed, often a very destabilising force as a mechanism for succession as well.
After being proclaimed emperor by the Brits, Constantine had the bright idea of making Christianity a lawful religion. So the Spanish Inquisition was really the Brits' fault....
