PATRICK LET LOOSE IN SWITZERLAND. In Berne to sort out my visa to Pakistan, I spent a truly lovely evening with Ireland's legate and Mrs Lynch, afterwards with habitual sobreity missing the last train back to my village and spending the night hours chatting up homeless people and prostitutes in a train station, and getting kicked out of a cantina for asking the nice underworld chaps there too many questions; returned to find dissertation strangely unfinished.

Dear Patrick, Rest assured that if it all really gets bad you can come to the honky-tonks in Oklahoma--long way from the beer cellar at Trinity, eh? I guarantee this laconic bunch will treat you right and not throw you out [looking for spare spittoon]. Motto: When you start at the bottom, the only way to go is up. So what is your email address anyway? Voice from the past,
