CAN AMERICAN PATRIOTS ROOT FOR FRANCE IN THE WORLD CUP? I have no choice. Ever since I first saw Zidane play (not live, just on TV) in the 1998 tourney, I've been captivated.

If you can't deal with that, just think of Freedom Fries and tell yourself that OxBlog isn't rooting for France, it's rooting for Freedom. (Or go read Pejman's blog. He's rooting for Italy.)

Anonymous - no kidding. Although Theirry Henry pretending he got hit in the face instead of the chest against Spain helped France go up 2-1 against them, taking Spain out of it.

I dont really care who wins, to be honest. I guess I want France, but not terribly enthusiastically. I'll be attending a local minor league baseball game instead of watching the final.

As a side note, does anyone find it interesting, that for all the racial tensions in France with regards to immigrants, Muslims and Muslim immigrants, only about 3 of the guys who actually play on their national team are white and one of them (Ribery) is a Muslim convert. The rest are black, of Algerian descent (Zidane), Muslim or a mix of at least two of the three.
