PROGRESSIVES IN THE G.O.P. The Teddy Roosevelt tradition lives. GOPProgress.com is a brand new website edited by the very impressive Liz Mair. According to the site,
If you’re a moderate or a small “l” libertarian Republican looking for a forum to share your views on everything from taxes to national security to our environment, you’ve come to the right place!

GOPProgress.com gives mainstream Republicans like you a place to discuss current policies and politics in the nation's capital and across the country. Voice your opinions, meet like-minded people, and engage in thoughtful debate with Republicans committed to the ideal of real progress for our party, and real progress for our country.
GOP Progress is an interactive site that wants its readers to set up diaries. The site also features exclusive interviews with Republicans such as Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Let's hope the site is a big success and that principled, thoughtful Republicans come to represent the party's mainstream. It's going to be an uphill fight.

Only if you think "New Nationalism" means "small-l libertarianism."

A nice thought, being something of a libertarian myself. But I think we would be deluding ourselves if we thought the Republicans were ever going to be libertarian! McCain was rejected for Bush in 2000, and that put paid to his ambitions. He is now too old. A pity, because he would have been so much better than Bush - Mickey Mouse would have been better! But my 'perfect storm' is a contest between Hillary Clinton and McCain. WOW! I would watch that contest with relish, and no matter what the outcome, America can't help but being better off than it is under Commander Cuckoo Bananas. Apologies to The Simpsons :)

"principled, thoughtful Republicans"

So, conservatives can not be "principled, thoughtful Republicans"? Only liberals and "moderates" are "principled, thoughtful"?

Correct.
