Incidentally to the latter term, it is recounted of Neville Chamberlain that he went to his formal appointment at Buckingham Palace uncertain about whether 'to kiss hands' was literal or metaphorical. The staff at the Palace were equally uncertain on the point, due to customary secrecy of private meetings between a monarch and prime minister. After several awkward seconds, when George VI invited Chamberlain to sit down without offering a hand, Chamberlain deduced his answer. (0) opinions -- Add your opinion
