WHY I STUDY ARABIC: Enrolling today in my first day of an Arabic course at SOAS, I had to share D. Cowan, Modern Literary Arabic (Cambridge University Press, 1958) at vi: 'the student [can] then proceed to ... intercourse with Arabic speakers.'

Sir Richard Burton, late of Trinity College, Oxford and of Sindh, would be proud.
