ERNEST F. HOLLINGS DISAPPOINTS ME. He and Robert Byrd were the only two Senators who voted against the Senate's resolution against Israel. Holling's reasoning? He said it was a "simplistic, one-sided proposal that was political in nature and not in Israel's best interests." Not in Israel's best interests? Israel is defending itself as would any other democracy, and Congress was right to express its support for Israel's fight against terrorism. It's not a tough decision to make when 80% of Palestinians support murder suicide bombings and even a higher percentage cling to the delusion of return to their pre-1948 homes. Israel is and was ready for a two-state solution; it's up to the Palestinians to demonstrate that they too are ready. 94 Senators did not issue an endorsement of Israel's offensive. They merely expressed their support for Israel's self-defense.
