PETER DE JONGE WRITES an excellent NY Times Magazine cover piece about sportscasters and their relationship to males in American society. De Jonge's section on Tim McCarver’s relationship to baseball fans reminded me of Al Gore's relationship to many voters during the 2000 campaign -- McCarver is criticized for "trying to prove how much smarter he is than they are." Especially after the first debate, Gore was criticized for talking down to the audience and trying to prove how smart he was. It seems like everyone hates the know-it-all. My favorite sentence is one about hard-core sports fans today: "With the odd allowance for extreme mathematical or artistic ability and eccentric parenting, they include pretty much every heterosexual male in America."
