IRAQI INTELLECTUALS: For those of you who can get by in French, this piece from Le Monde is a sobering but fascinating glance into what Iraqi (and, more broadly, Arab) intellectuals and academics are saying about the U.S. presence in Iraq. Arab intellectuals' voices are complex, nuanced, and not monolithic, and though they often are obscenely cynical about our motives (and believe we perceive them all as bedouin), they are nonetheless people whom we need to be engaging, listening to, and trying to convince. Despite the breadth of the Iraqi intellectual tradition, which even managed to survive Saddam, theirs is a voice which is sorely lacking in American reportage.
