NEW EGYPTIAN BROTHERHOOD HEAD: There's a new head for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt - Muhammad Mahdi 'Akef has succeeded the deceased Mamoun al-Hudeibi as head of the organisation which is a parent to many current jihadist-orientated religious groups in the Middle East, including Hamas. The changeover of command occurred on 14th January, according to
ArabicNews.com, and
Memri has organised a collection of his early speeches, which do not seem to be taking the Brotherhood in a radically different direction from his predecessors. The best profiles of the organisation online are to be found at
FAS,
the Encyclopaedia of the Orient, and in
Economist's broader survey of Egyptian political forces.
