NOT A MANDATE. A "MAN DATE":
Simply defined, a man date is two heterosexual men socializing without the crutch of business or sports. It is two guys meeting for the kind of outing a straight man might reasonably arrange with a woman.
Yikes! I just prefer to go out with my gay friends. There's no sexual tension there, because they could all do so much better than me. (Hat tip: The lovely SC)

Is this a theoretical concept or has there been an actual documented case of a Man Date?

Sorry, now I've actually read the article and instead I think it's much ado about nothing. Turns out I go on Man Dates all the time.

It's called "hanging out with a friend." What this article is really about is how too many reporters think they can take the pulse of America by surveying their friends.

In this one's case, homophobic friends.

"Also covered several months ago in The NYT"

That's because the linked article is THE TIMES ARTICLE. (I assume that David linked it because the actual times article - the one that anon 9:44 linked - is behind TimesSelect firewall.)

As I commented many months ago when the article first appeared and was discussed in the blogosphere, the reporter misses a HUGE aspect of male interaction: when males go out to (how to put this delicately?) pick up chicks and get laid. You know - going out to clubs and bars; preparation for same. That has nothing to do with "business or sports", but comprised the majority of my male-bonding time before I got married.
