A very interesting essay. Congratulations. The problem here isn't so much anthropological approaches to war, but a kind of naive culturalism long abandoned in the majority of social sciences.

There's a larger argument here about our tendency to explain specific differences with reference to overarching cultural traits, a tendency that you rightly flag as endemic not only to certain classes of scholars, but also practitioners.
